Running for Office

I decided to run for city council a couple of months ago. It's been an interesting ride. The election takes place in about two weeks. Just when it seems I'm on the brink of losing hope, someone encourages or helps me.

Some places I expect to find encouragement don't offer any. My mom said, "You have too much going on to do that." At a Mary Kay meeting I attended as a favor to a friend, she offered absolutely no encouragement. However, some friends have helped by handing out leaflets, watching me participate in community events or donating to the campaign. Still others have told me they think I'd do a good job, including my ex-husband.

One question I keep hearing is, "Why are you running for office?" There are a few different reasons. For one, I want to glorify Jesus in it. I want to bring His Kingdom into the realm of government. I've gotten mixed responses on that reason. But hey, it's the truth! Second, I've had an interest in government since college. Before getting pregnant, I wanted to work in Sacramento or Washington D.C. for a think tank, politician or news outlet. I've also felt the Holy Spirit's prompting to this arena. Another reason is to be a good example to my daughter. I want to model going after dreams to her. And lastly, I wanted to concentrate on something constructive rather than dwelling on a past heartache from earlier this year.

Come Nov. 2, we'll see what happens. In the meantime, I'll just do what I can when I find time between outage shifts. I'm endeavoring to run the race as strong as possible through the finish line. If I'm meant to win, God bring it to pass. If I don't, I'll know He called me to it for a reason that will become clear sooner or later.
